LECTURE - Element & Principle of Design
Elements of Design
In this lecture 1.1, we have learnt about the principle of design and gestalt theory. Dr Jinchi have taught us all the elements of design which contain point, line, shape, form, texture, space and colour.
In lecture 1.2, I have learnt about the gestalt theory. Gestalt theory is containing principles of similarity, the principle of continuation, the principle of closure, the principle of proximity, the principle of figure-ground and the principle of symmetry & order.
Principle of Contrast
1. Point
Fig 1, Point
A point is also known as a dot and it is the simplest element of
design.
2. Line
Lines can have many forms, can indicate directions and can also be
grouped to depict qualities of light and shadow and to form patterns and
different textures.
Fig 3, Organic VS Geometric shapes
Shapes can be divided into two general categories which are Geometric
shapes can Organic shapes.
Fig 5, Dust Texture
Texture can also be divided into two categories. One is an actual texture
that can experience by touch and the other one is simulated or implied
which creates to look like the real texture.
6. Space
Space is an indefinable, the general receptacle of all things.
7. Colour
Fig 7, Colour wheel images
Colour is the visual byproduct of the spectrum of light as it is either
transmitted through a transparent medium or as it is absorbed and
reflected off a surface.
1. Principle of similarity
Fig 8, 7 gestalt principles of visual perceptions
The principle of similarity simply states that when items share some visual
characteristic, they are assumed to be related in some way.
2. Principle of continuation
Fig 9, Gestalt principles of perception
The gestalt of continuation is the tendency of the human eye to follow a
continuous path be it lines, curves, or intersections until it encounters
another path or intersection.
3. Principle of closure
Fig 10, Gestalts principles - Closure
The gestalt principle of closure states that people will fill in the
blanks to perceive a complete object whenever an external stimulus
partially matches that object.
4. Principle of proximity
Fig 11, Proximity principle in visual design
The principle of proximity states that items close together is likely to
be perceived as part of the same group.
5. Principle of figure-ground
Fig 12, Exploring the gestalt principles of design
The figure-ground principle states that people instinctively perceive
objects as either being in the foreground or the background.
Fig 13, Law of symmetry and order
This principle says that your brain will perceive ambiguous shapes in as
simple a manner as possible.
Instruction
Exercise - Principle of contrast
We need to create a design about the principle of design and a design of
gestalt theory. We were allowed to do research online also known as visual
research and finally combine our research and idea together.
Fig 14, Tips for using contrast to enhance readability
Fig 15, A penchant for patterns
Fig 16, The ultimate colour combined cheat sheet
When I am doing visual research, I found these 3 images and they inspire
me to get a final outcome of contrast. I have combined the contrast of
shapes and colours to become my final artwork.
Fig 17, Contrast of shapes by Lee Yan Xu
This is my first idea for this artwork.
Fig 18, Combination of contrast of shapes and colour by Lee Yan

I am using the square and circles and also orange and blue colours to
show my final artwork.
Exercise - Gestalt Theory
Fig 20 , Gestalt
In my gestalt visual research, I have referred to these two images. I
have combined the principle of closure and symmetry to become my final
artwork.
This is both of my final artwork.
Feedback
I have been told that both of my design have reflected respective
principle of contrast and gestalt theory. So, in my final artwork I
just do some changes to both of them.
Reflection
This kind of exercise is very fun and I ma really enjoy it. I am enjoying
the time when I am doing research and also thinking the idea by
myself.
